Part 2 (of 4)
We took the night train from Grand Central to Essex Junction, where the Shannons met us, 5:30 am, en route - this trip or another - I awoke early as we neared Montpelier and the porter took me up to see the State Capital. Mother came to, while the train was stopped and found me missing! Brief panic.
At Shannons, the Carrs had the front of the house upstairs, with Baa in a little room off the first floor parlor. We had the back end, over the kitchen. Both families, I think, had nursemaids - at least one of them did - Marion Carr and Mother spent many days exploring back roads! The Carrs had a roadster with a rumble seat which we loved and we had a Ford touring car with open sides and glassine panels to put up when it rained.
It was while we were at Shannons that we found Squabetty. Having climbed most of the main mountain trails. We noted and abandoned one marked on the Green Mt. Trail Guide, and in getting to where it started, landed at Squabetty, probably in our second year. Mother and Father had begun thinking of buying a place and I think they seriously considered a piece of land on the Irish Settlement Road where John Butler (The Butler Farm) now has a house. I recall a lovely weather barn on it and great views - no house.
